Car Rental HawaiiCar Rental HawaiiRenting a car in Hawaii isn’t all that much different than renting a car domestically; it is, after all a United State! But before you go, you want to make sure you have a reservation; there’s nothing like not having your car not there when you have made a reservation; imagine if you didn’t make one and thought you’d ‘just pick a car up’. In a way, I’m sympathetic towards the rental car companies; they must get a lot of no shows to overbook as often and blatantly as they do; still. Anyway, if you remember a few key pointers, your trip through the islands should be a breeze. First of all, are you sure you want to rent a car in Hawaii? Most people who travel to Hawaii do so for vacations. They are there to relax; adding a car into the mix not only complicates things by having to buy gas (!) but driving is, for many of us, symbolic of the mundane, day-in, day-out chores we do with cars like “go to work, pick up the kids, get groceries, go to the gym, blah, blah, blah-” Even those of us who like driving and/or don’t have cars can get stressed out by cars. The last time I rented a car was for the Christmas Holidays; I drove to my mom’s new house, which was way out in the middle of nowhere, got lost, and (of course) we got in a fight-about something. The one thing I do recall about the trip was renting the car and having to drive out into the middle of nowhere and all the headache that went along with that. But if your business absolutely depends on your being mobile, or if you’re sure you want to be able to do certain things or your stay will extend beyond what’s practical for pubic transportation use, then you should probably rent a car. It’s fairly easy to do; just be sure to remember a few things: Most of the domestic car companies have offices in Hawaii. There are other local places you may use, but if this is your first trip out to the islands and you’re going without recommendation from anyone else, you may be better suited to use one of the bigger companies like Alamo Car Rental, Dollar Rent a Car, Avis Rent a Car, or Budget Car Rentals while staying in Hawaii. If you’re bent on getting the best deal on the cheapest rental car, you can use the Better Business Beau’s website to check up on independent companies. Most of the rules which apply domestically are in accord on the islands. Many rental companies offer ‘free mileage’ (but really, what is that? Hawaiian islands are only SO big; still, if you’re commuting, this can be beneficial) special weekly or monthly rates which may even be good for someone staying lesser time; for example if you’re there for five days, you may get quoted a better rate by doing the weekly rate rather than five days at the daily rate. Many companies will pick you up at the airport; most rental car companies are within relative proximity to the airport regardless. However, if you arrange it such, you can do an express check in type thing and be off straight from baggage claim. There are restrictions between 21-24 years of age; most companies require that you’re at least 21 years old. You need an unrestricted license and you must wear your seatbelt! Otherwise, renting a car in Hawaii should be a snap; just make sure to make arrangements before you go and you’ll be all set.
