Car Rental EuropeCar Rental EuropeBecause Western European countries are like the storied adults to America’s rebellious infantilism, there are many similarities in renting your car in Europe to borrowing your uncles car; the car will probably smell bad, it will probably be a stick shift, once you do get the car, you’ll need to bring back a full tank or you’ll pay for it, and if you get in an accident, just like your old Uncle Jimmy’s jerky pickup, you’re four times more likely to die in that accident, so don’t do it! First of all, let’s go piece by piece with all that you’ll need and all you could end up paying! Cheap car rentals in Europe and cheap European accommodations sometimes go hand in hand. If you’re staying in Europe and you need a car rental, the hotel’s often the place to look. Hotel workers love to gossip and show off their knowledge in the hopes of being helpful. If your front desk or bell hop drops a comment that saves you hundreds over the course of your stay, it’s customary etiquette to show them a little love by way of reciprocity. Besides, these guys have your room keys; and not that they’d ever remember to do something to your stuff, but they could do something like call housekeeping off so you have no fresh towels or something similarly unpleasant. In Europe you can have an American driver’s license and that will suffice. However if you’re driving through Eastern Europe or heading directly into an Eastern country, you will need an international drivers license which you would get before you left. Car rentals in Europe are very similar to car rentals domestically. Budget Rent a Car and Hertz Rent a Car are two subsidiaries who have offices in Europe; this is especially beneficial if you’ve never been to Europe before as they have websites where you can get direct quotes, as well as any assistance you’d need in your foreign country. Most cars in Europe are significantly smaller than in the US; they also are probably stick shift so if you’ve not driven stick since your dad taught you in your high school parking lot, then you’d better brush up. Also, if you’re under 25 looking to rent a car, you may be out of luck as the minimum age is typically 25. You also need to have a credit card. Speaking of credit cards you’d better have one with plenty of money on it, because not only is gasoline 3x the price in the US, you really need to spend that extra money to get that full collision insurance in the event. Also parking is really very tight, so be sure and practice not only your stick shift, but also your parallel parking with stick. Finally, if you get a parking ticket and its like, your last day, don’t blow it off! Your credit card will be charged ultimately along with some hefty fines. Renting a car in Europe is one of the most gallant things a person can do; but don’t go looking for discounts. They won’t be along all that soon.
